University of Alberta

The University of Alberta is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was established in 1908. The university has five campuses: the original North campus, South campus, Augustana in rural Camrose, Campus St. Jean, Enterprise Square, and Calgary.


In 2017, the University of Alberta was among the world’s top 200 universities, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The university enrolls 37,830 students from 143 countries. Approximately 21% are international students. 81% of the student population is undergraduate, and 19% are graduate. U of A has 18 faculties which offer 200 undergraduate and 500 graduate programs.

Environmental Sciences, Education, Medicine, and Maths are a few of the University’s most attractive disciplines. Alberta also offers an MBA through its School of Business. The MBA is a full-time 20-month program. For international students, the tuition fees for the full-time MBA is approximately 54000 CDN.

For admission, the applicants are required to submit a recognized undergraduate degree transcript with a GPA of at least 3, GMAT score, English language proficiency test results, letter of intent, two letters of reference. Applicants must also have relevant work experience.

The application form can be accessed online. Supporting documents must also be uploaded online. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews. While the general deadline for applications is 1 June, the exact deadlines are on the form.

The university of Alberta offers generous financial aid to deserving students. In 2016, over $1 million was offered to MBA students. All students admitted to the MBA program at Alberta are considered for entrance awards. They do not need to apply separately. The value of these awards varies between 1000 – 10000 CDN. Scholarships offered include awards such as the Bernard Greer Aylen Scholarship, Rodney E Schneck Prize in Organizational Analysis, and the AIMCo Scholarship.

Another sought-after degree program at the University of Alberta is the M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering. This program is administered jointly by the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. As with other graduate programs, it is mandatory that students consult with supervisors before making an application. Prospective candidates are required to submit transcripts, English language test scores, reference letters, etc. The tutors decide whether they’re willing to accept an applicant, supervise their research, and fund their student. A supervisor must agree to work with a student, only then can a formal application be made.

The deadlines for submission of materials by international applicants (except for those from China and Nigeria), are July 1 for September entry, November 1 for January entry, March 1 for May entry, and May 1 for July entry. The tuition fees for the program are 8790 Canadian dollars a year.

The University of Alberta’s Faculty of Arts also offers an MA in Economics and Finance which is also incredibly popular with internationals students, and scores well on international rankings.

Eligible candidates must have an undergraduate degree in Economics. They must also have completed courses in Calculus and Statistics. International students must also provide proof of their English language proficiency through valid TOEFL or IELTS scores. The university only accepts GRE scores. The deadline for applications is 31 January.

The annual tuition fees are 9,740 CDN for 2016-17.
