Do you dream of making the best investment decisions like Warren Buffett, or of becoming king of the Wall Street like J.P. Morgan? Do you want to figure out how money works? Isn’t it fascinating to reflect on how differently that same unit of money (whether a dollar a rupee or a pound) was valued in your grandparents’ time than it is in yours? Or do you just want to make smart money decisions for the rest of your life? If you answered yes to any of the questions, Knowledge@Wharton High School has an exciting opportunity for you.

In 2019, Knowledge@Wharton High School will offer its first ever finance track as part of the Global Young Leaders Academy. GYLA Finance will have three sessions over summer on Wharton’s beautiful campus in the heart of Philadelphia. The dates are as below:

Session 1: June 23 – July 6, 2019
Session 2: July 7 – July 20, 2019
Session 3: July 21 – August 3, 2019

This specialized program, launched after 4 successful editions of GYLA’s  Business & Entrepreneurship track, will cover the following themes

  • Value of Money [Time Value + Net Present Value]
  • How Stocks Work
  • Investments: Risks and Returns
  • Financial reporting
  • Ethics of Investment

The program will allow you to learn in-depth about core business skills and concepts from Wharton faculty, Ph.D. candidates and KWHS high school teachers. You will also take part in applied learning sessions, and conversations with Wharton alumni. What’s more the program will also offer an interactive college-admissions workshop to help figure out the ins-and-outs of the application process. Finally, you will work on a team-based investment project and presentation to conclude the course.

A world-class academic experience is not the only thing on offer. Diana Drake, Managing Editor, Knowledge@Wharton High School, told BrainGain Magazine, that the GYLA Finance program is “a chance [for students] to come to an Ivy league campus, to get a very academic, a very rigorous experience. And also, to get to know other students from around the world through the very international nature of this program. [Students also] get to explore what it’s like to live in the U.S. culture.”

GYLA students live in dormitories on-campus and dine at the college halls. A unique element that this program will offer is bonding with select Penn undergraduate students, who serve as residential advisors and teaching assistants, through group projects and college activities. The program will also include field trips to Philadelphia scenic spots, King of Prussia Mall, and Six Flags Theme Park.

Excited? Only 200 students will be selected for this program. The program fee is $6,000 plus a refundable security deposit of US $500. Financial aid is also available.

High school students, currently in 9th to 12th grade, with a strong interest in finance are eligible for the program. The deadline for applications is April 30th for all applicants.
