At the Console with S.O.N.R.: 7 Questions with DJ Rishi Handa

Armed with a BA degree in advertising from Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, S.O.N.R.’s Rishi Handa started his musical journey through sheer passion – buying his first mixer in 2001, and performing all over the island from bars and nightclubs, to the famous Full Moon gatherings on the star-lit beaches of Honolulu.

Armed with a BA degree in advertising from Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, S.O.N.R.’s Rishi Handa started his musical journey through sheer passion – buying his first mixer in 2001, and performing all over the island from bars and nightclubs, to the famous Full Moon gatherings on the star-lit beaches of Honolulu.

 

Returning to New Delhi in 2005, S.O.N.R.’s Rishi Handa found himself a full-fledged musician: signing with DadA Music as resident DJ (2007-2008), being invited to perform in Norway, joining forces with Audio Ashram, and signing on with Occulta Records in 2011. He regularly performs all over India.

 

 

1.  What was the plan when you went abroad for University – did you always intend to be a musician?

  No, I had no clue that I wanted to be a musician. Actually, I had no clue what I wanted to study at all!

2.   What have you learned since starting your musical career-journey?

Anything is possible. Just keep believing in yourself.

3.  What words of advice would you give young graduates leaving India for higher studies?

If music is your path, then a course in music production will help you gain experience as well strengthen your foundation. Your knowledge and skills will always be of use to you, no matter what career path you choose.

4.  When you left India, what do you remember packing to take with you that was particularly useful?

     Strong tea leaves, cardamom, cinnamon and clove – to make masala chai.

5.  Things about India you miss when abroad?

       Food

6.  Things about India you don’t miss when abroad?

      Pollution

7.  Favourite musical style?

      Electronic music!
