New Zealand announces excellence awards for undergraduate Indian students

Education New Zealand 'future proofs Indian students for success' with the launch of its scholarship program (NZEA) for high-achieving and ambitious aspirants.

Education New Zealand, for the first time in India launched scholarships for undergraduate students on April 17, 2019. The applications are open till June 10, 2019 for the academic year starting in February 2020.  A total of 18 scholarships worth $10,000 ( or 84 lakhs) each will be awarded to Indian students this year. 

Jointly funded by New Zealand universities and Education New Zealand (ENZ), NZEA offers scholarships across eight universities for ambitious Indian students. The eight NZ universities are:

  • Auckland University of Technology
  • Lincoln University
  • Massey University
  • The University of Auckland
  • The University of Waikato
  • University of Canterbury
  • University of Otago
  • Victoria University of Wellington
     
The undergraduate awards build on the postgraduate New Zealand Excellence Awards scheme which has supported 100 Indian students since the date of its inception. New Zealand is an increasingly popular destination for Indian students. In 2018, there was a 17% increase in the number of Indian students enrolling at New Zealand universities, and a further 43% increase in first-time student visas in 2019. 

According to the QS World Rankings 2019, theseNew Zealand Universities rank within the top 3 percent of universities worldwide. At the undergraduate level, all eight universities offer an opportunity to experience New Zealand’s academic excellence, welcoming community and awe-inspiring landscapes.

These universities are known for specialist courses in animation, fashion, aviation, sports technology, cyber security, law, veterinary medicine, agriculture, forestry and other experiential new-edge learning programs. Most classrooms in NZ universities also offer competitive teacher-student ratios.

To be eligible students must fulfil the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years at the time of application
  • Be a current citizen of India
  • Hold a minimum equivalent GPA of B+ in your most recent or highest tertiary qualification
  • Have an offer from a New Zealand University
