Paneer, Cottage Cheese, and Cultural Diversity

Indian cookbooks sometimes translate 'paneer' as 'cottage cheese', but is that correct? If so, how would one translate the hundreds of kinds of European cheese in a way that reflects the diversity of other cultures? Sometimes, it's better not to translate – understanding another culture in its own terms is a good way to broaden one's horizons.
