Rotman Makes the MBA Application Smarter

Rotman School of Management wants to know how business savvy the MBA applicants are. Here's how it’s going to test them.

University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management is now accepting applications for the Fall 2016 intake of the Full Time MBA program.

The Rotman School of Management is located in the heart of Canada’s commercial and cultural capital, and is part of the University of Toronto, one of the world’s top 20 research universities. The Rotman School fosters innovative thinking so that its graduates can rise to today’s global business challenges.

In 2012, the Rotman Full Time MBA program was the first program to introduce a video question component in its application process. This has since been adapted by several other leading MBA programs.

From 2015, the University has introduced an innovation to the application process. A timed written response question will be included along with the two video questions, which all applicants are required to complete.

In the online application process, after completing their video questions, applicants will receive one written response question delivered via video.  The question will begin by providing some context to help explain why it is relevant for a Rotman student, and applicants will have a total of 10 minutes to read and reply to the question.  This is not videotaped but is delivered ‘live’ with one opportunity to write and submit.

“We identified a need to find a tool to better assess the regular business-communication skills and ‘voice’ of our applicants,” says Niki da Silva, Director, Recruitment & Admissions, Full Time MBA. “We were missing an opportunity to see the more casual and real-time style our students use most frequently to write emails that they will carry forward in their careers.  There is no “right” answer to this component – our team is simply interested in better understanding this element of our applicant’s communication abilities.”

This year there will be five deadline dates for applications. These are listed below.

  • Round 1: October 19, 2015 (Decision by December 18, 2015)
  • Round 2: January 11, 2016 (Decision by February 26, 2016)
  • Round 3: February 29, 2016 (Decision by April 15, 2016)
  • Round 4: April 18, 2016 (Decision by May 20, 2016)
  • Round 5: May 30, 2106 (Decision by June 24, 2016)
