Junior Staff Writer

Location: New Delhi, India Department: Editorial Type: Full Time
About the Job:

Brain Gain is looking for a Junior Staff Writer to handle various administrative duties and editorial operations for the Brain Gain Magazine (www.braingainmag.com). The ideal candidate will use this position as a launching point for other opportunities in the editorial department -- including reporting, research, Web production, data management or technical operations -- but must also demonstrate excellent organization skills and the ability to perform other journalism duties as assigned under deadline pressure.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Research and write news and straight forward short stories, analysis and narrative, in accordance with identified style and structure
  • Fact-checking articles under tight deadline
  • Aiding staff reporters and editors in support of articles and special projects published in the magazine and on the site
  • Contributing content to our blogs
  • Pitching story ideas and writing short articles for online publication
  • Coding and posting stories to our web site
  • Researching photographs to accompany stories
  • Promoting content via social networking sites
  • Participating in editorial meetings for the web site

Minimum Qualification:

  • Candidate should have a degree in journalism or a related field, with 0-3 years of experience with newspapers or other daily publications preferred.
  • Excellent writing skills (and the ability to write quickly and accurately), preferably demonstrated via published media outlets
  • Sophisticated understanding of how to find news and information for a particular audience
  • Experience and desire to pursue complex research and fact-checking projects
  • Online blogging and multimedia skills (video and audio editing experience is a plus)
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team and in a fast-paced work environment
  • Strong interest in education and familiarity with educational news sites and blogs
  • Must take initiative, share responsibilities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to analyze reader trends and statistics.
