Why is India Critical to International Students’ Recruitment ?

By Ajit Motwani, CEO of Education Business, Salwan Media

India has seen phenomenal economic growth in the last two decades with large number of families being added each year to the population that can afford quality Higher Education through study abroad for their children. This growth is evident in over 200,000 international students from India in 2012 across all major education destination countries. In the coming decades, given Indian demographics, India will not only define the international students’ recruitment but also the focus of the international education sector itself.

Indian Families have traditionally always valued the Education of their children as the top priority to ensure a secured future through upward social and economic mobility. The higher education institutions growth (from 256 Univ. 12,806 colleges in 2000-01 to 564 Univ. 33,023 colleges in 2010-11 and currently over 650 Univ.) and quality in India has not matched up to the growing demand from huge youth population in India. This has led to India alongside China emerging as the top education source country for almost all the important education destination countries such as US, UK, Australia and Canada during the last more than a decade.

International Students’ Recruitment is important even to the large global economies/countries and is among the top 5 exports. Besides contributing at National economic and entrepreneurial level; the talented international students through their high tuition fee and enthusiasm to learn, contribute significantly to the ability of top Universities/ Institutions to retain quality faculty and research output.

With Indian demographics advantage and the demographic concerns of many of the currently advanced economies; Indian youth population is expected to play a critical role in supporting the top western economies not only through education exports, research and entrepreneurship but also by way of quality human resources availability at a reasonable cost to the aging population in these countries.

Indian family values training ensure that the students carry reverence and love for their faculty/ institution irrespective of their social status. This many times translates into millions of dollars contributed by Alumni to their Alma Mater (e.g. Ratan Tata and Anand Mahindra contributions) not to mention the huge soft diplomacy gains to the Alma Mater countries through their Alumni networks.
